Sabanqui is now known as Sabancuy, in the State of Campeche, Mexico. Anciently it was in the Olmec and then Mayan empires. It took the Spanish 170 years from first discovery of the Yucatan Peninsula to finally conquering it. In that time many settlements were established. Sabanqui sits in the Estuario de Sabancuy or Sabanqui Estuary. The settlement is accessed by two channels from the sea, by way of the Pujo River and the Polcai Inlet. Thus pirates have a way to escape if an enemy ship approaches from one direction or the other.
