History

Any type of vessel could become a privateering vessel. The largest were of the same size and power as small frigates. Some were built as warships: an old or unwanted warship might be sold off to a privateer, with which a privateer could be commissioned into regular service.

Strategy and Use

The Discovery fits into the category that players often describe as "shotgun" ships. Its fast reload, high damage and relatively poor range mean that players will typically sail directly at the enemy and unload their maximum payload at close range. A discovery outfitted for armor, reload and damage tends to serve well for this role.

It is arguable whether the Discovery is superior to the 'Raa' Mastercraft Frigate, a trade-off is made in terms of reload time for increased speed and armor. Nonetheless it is an excellent ship for experience grinding, and often considered one of the best ships for privateers to captain up to level 50.

For the same reason why the Discovery is a phenomenal PvE ship, it performs poorly in PvP. It is out-classed and out-ranged by more maneuverable and faster ships. The difficult refit and low durability make it an expensive and clumsy alternative to PvP-orientated ships. Use in PvP is generally discouraged.

Attainability

The 'Discovery' Privateer Frigate refit ship is obtained through a quest in the Privateer Establishment by talking to the person at the far back of the Privateer Establishment.

The refit can be gained through Marks of Victory: Go to the Admiralty Office in your nations capital to trade the 60 marks for the Refit: Privateer 'Raa' Frigate. Take the Refit and a Raa Frigate deed back to the quest giver in the Privateer Establishment and receive an 'Discovery' Privateer Frigate Ships deed.

The Discovery Refit can also be obtained from exchanging 5 Magistrate's Marks of Favour in your capital city. These Marks are obtained from following Magistrate's quest lines.
