A refit 'Mystique' Polacre that handles exceptionally well for its size, while still carrying a modest amount of firepower.

History

European navies were impressed by the Barbery Corsairs and their Xebecs which harried Mediterranean shipping unless bribes were paid. As a counter the "polacre," "poleacre" or "polacca" was created. This ship carries a hybrid mast system. It is similar to a Xebec, sharing the same hull design, but has a square-rigged mainmast in place of the Xebec's lateen. Thus it retains the excellent close haul and beam reach sailing charateristics of the Xebec while still able to pursue ships sailing broad reach and running before the wind. This ship was modelled by "Spankybus" Mignone.

Strategy and Use

One of the fastest ships, arguably the fastest ship in Close Haul and Upwind, excellent acceleration, good turning performance, very large crew for its level and class.

Tactics

Because this ship has good maneuverability, acceleration, speed, and both bow and stern chasers, it makes arguably the best ship for Tackling. Because of its speed, it also makes a good ship for broadside combat or boarding combat.

Comparable Ships

The 'Mystique' Polacre is the original ship refitted for this design, while the two sail identically, the 'Algiers' has more guns and of a larger caliber.

The 'Stralsund' Frigate has more broadside guns and armor than the Polacre, however it does not show the same excellent sailing characteristics and so is more useful for broadside combat than the 'Algiers'.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This ship has better armor and guns plus a built in +5% Reload rate over the 'Mystique' Polacre.

Attainability

This ship is obtained by completing the Polacre Refit quest line from Uncle Ibrahim.

Sources

In "Pirate Ship 1660-1730," Angus Konstam presents a drawing of a polacca from 1679, and mentions that they were found in the Caribbean.
